Senior midfielder Colette Hanlon headed in the only goal for the Dons against Michigan State to seal the win 1-0. Freshman Amy Ostergaard received the assist when she launched a throw-in at 82:41 from the left corner to the mouth of the goal enabling Hanlon to score. "I knew it was possible to score on that play because Amy can throw really hard," Hanlon said of her first goal of the season. "It was just great to score because we just really needed that one goal to get us out of our slump."

The nationally regarded goalkeeper tandem of juniors Sandy Draghi and Amy Voiland produced the team's second shutout of the season. Each had important one-on-one saves against the Gators, stopping the momentum from shifting back to San Francisco State. Both return after tying the school record of 10 shutouts in the 1996 season. Amy Ostergaard and Erin Terbush scored the other two USF goals. Freshman midfielder Mollie Hautau assisted on both. Hautau originally was expected to play a marking back role for the Dons, but was moved up into the midfield to create problems for opposing defenses.

In non-conference play on Oct. 3, San Francisco beat Louisiana State University 3-1 with goals by Terbush, Amy Ostergaard, and Moreci. Following Terbush's goal, a half volley off a feed from Wright 10 minutes into play, the Tigers scored on an own goal late in the first half to tie the game. The Dons didn't put the game out of reach until th 78:25 mark, when Ostergaard put in a loose ball off of a USF corner kick to push the score to 2-1 (TheFoghorn).
