At USF Bob played varsity basketball three years from 1952 to 1955, and was a member of the NCAA Championship team. After college he was part of a group sponsored by the Department of State who made a two month good-will tour of South America and Central America playing basketball in 29 different cities. He later worked as a merchant seaman, owned a bar, and was a liquor salesman before working as a deckhand on the Golden Gate Transit Ferry until he retired in 1988.
