Sandor Hites was born on June 22, 1946, and escaped from Hungary at the age of 14. He attended Woodside Priory High School in Portola Valley, CA. Prior to entering USF in 1964, Hites played for coach Negoesco on the Hakoah Youth Team that won the first Junior National McGuire Cup in 1961 against the Junior Lighthouse Boys of Philadelphia. He played soccer for the Dons from 1965 to 1967.

In his sophomore year in 1965, Hites scored five goals in conference play. He was an All-WCISC selection for the first time. The team, which went undefeated in league play, went on to win the NCAA Western Regionals before losing in the NCAA quarterfinals St. Louis University.

The following year, the team posted a regular season 7-0 record giving up only 4 goals and scoring 30. Hites proved to be a standout on the team, especially in the NCAA action by scoring the winning goals. Despite a sore knee, he scored on a 20-yard kick for the first goal in the semi-final game against Army. He then went on to assist in a second goal and USF won 2-0. In the finals, he scored a hat trick in a 5-2 victory over Long Island University. Nine minutes into the game, Hites dribbled the ball down the middle through the mud and slid it in from five yards out. His third and game-winning goal was a 24-yard kick that hit the left corner of the net. He was named NCAA MVP Offensive Player. For the second consecutive year, he was named All-WCISC.

In 1967, the team posted a 9-1 season record. Under pressure, Hites scored a goal on a beautiful line drive against arch rival Santa Clara. Receiving a post-season NCAA berth, his pass to Rudy Dekkers resulted in a 1-0 victory over UCLA and a tournament match against San Jose which ended 3-3. The win was awarded to the Spartans because they recorded more corner kicks. Despite an injury, Hites had another outstanding year and was named to the All-American First Team.

Hites received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1968. He completed his post-graduate work at the University of the Pacific and established a dental practice in Berkeley, CA.
