Harry Edward Hughes was born in England in 1913 and arrived in the United States at the age of 15. He attended Saint Ignatius College Preparatory and was on their track and the swim teams. He attended USF in the class of 1935, and played soccer for the Dons. He graduated with a Bachelor's in Politics and Economics. He was inducted into the San Francisco Hall of Fame in 1978.
Bill McNulty combined with Harry Hughes to take most of the honors for team-work in these preseason games. Bill shows exceptional ability to cross the ball from the right wing to his partner Harry who always seems to waiting at the right place to make a powerful offensive kick. With Harry returning to the championship form, which earned him all-coast recognition two years ago, and Bill crossing the ball with unerring accuracy, the pair should account for many of the Dons points in their conference games this season.
Time and time again, the backs worked the ball up to the forwards who in turn worked the ball into the very goal mouth, only to lose a possible point through the cause of overanxiousness. Harry (Harvey) Hughes, the fleet-footed outside right for the Dons, tallied early in the first half for the first marker, thus putting USF on the long end of the score. The shot was a difficult one from outside the California penalty area (TheFoghorn).
