The game was a pitchers' duel for the first seven innings, as Santa Clara's first inning sacrifice fly provided the only scoring. In the top of the eighth, though, the Dons broke away with a four-run inning. Singles by Ricardo Banuelos, Charles Sciutti, and Laurence Watkins loaded the bases with no outs, setting the table for Paul McDaniel, who singled home Banuelos to tie the score.
USF jumped ahead in the top of the second when Crawford walked and cruised home on singles by Daryl Hernandez and Ricardo Banuelos. The lead was short-lived as Vince Hooper hit a one-out double in the bottom of the inning, advanced to third on a single by Mitch Fieber, and scooted home on Tom Schatz's sacrifice fly (TheFoghorn).
