For a boy beginning his second year of college, Les Grimes is the possessor of a full share of athletic achievements. A 19S0 graduate of St. Ignatius High, where he lettered in baseball and basketball, Grimes attended City College last year, and continued to exhibit his athletic prowess by filling the fullback position on Coach Roy Didricksen's Ram soccer team, and also playing varsity center field on the baseball nine. Les was chosen to the Pacific Coast All-Star soccer team which battled the Dons last year. The 5 ft. 11 in., 180-pound redhead was also selected to the All-Conference baseball team—quite a feat when you consider the fact that the baseballers had only a .500 won-lost record for the year. Les was instrumental in leading his teammates to a victory over the State champs, Santa Rosa, and therein lies his biggest sports thrill to date: he doubled with the bases loaded to drive in the winning run, and also turned in some fielding gems to stave off a Santa Rosa scoring threat.
Promising rookies include outfielders Les Grimes and Dick Arnoldy; infielders Paul Torrente, George Zuka, Jerry Donovan, Len Heinz and Pete Nossardi; pitchers Dick Lawless, Ed Olmo, and Don Rebholtz.
By virtue of the unanimous vote of the student Executive Council last April, soccer is now a major sport. This classification will enable the players to wear large block letters, as do members of the other athletic teams. Returning veterans include Manuel Ortiz, J.M. Beattie, Bill Cox, Alex Labrador, Jose Leon, Ralph Pardell, Armando Denys, Albert Rangel, Bill Herup, Ray Gilmartin, Pete Ashe, Ron Edgeman, Ray Fazzio, and All- American Olifunmi Osibogun. New players will be Les Grimes, who played one year at City College, Andrew Conway, Thomas Klitzgaard, Rudolph Danglic, Joe Ignoffo, Antonio Romualdez, Al Muzi-Falconi, Andrew and John Tozychi, from Scotland; Mashood Danmole, from Nigeria, West Africa; Brian Pike and Patrick Ford, both of San Francisco; and Adrian Manzano, from the Philippines (TheFoghorn).
