Led by linebacker Bill Davis, who if there was one, had to be the top defensive standout, the Green and Gold defense smothered Cal State's attack limiting it to an unbelievable minus 9 yards on the ground, and two first downs, both in the air. Meanwhile, the Don offense began to roll. Late in the second quarter USF powered to the Hayward nine before being forced to give up the ball. Minutes later the Hilltoppers were again knocking at the Hayward goal line, this time from the 4. State held however, and at half time it was State 14, USF 0. The second half was all USF: Bill Davis and Dave Ohlerich, the stars of the Cal State victory. Davis intercepted a pass and made numerous tackles and ran 36 yards with a punt (which Ohlerich blocked) for the winning touchdown (TheFoghorn).
