"San Diego will be a good match for the top three players," Sablan said, "but we would have a much better chance if they structured the WCC tournament for individual players instead of holding team matches." The team will leave for San Diego on Thursday morning and play the Portland match at 2:00 p.m. "We lost to Portland 5-1 (singles matches only) at Portland so it should be another tough match," Sablan said. "We are at a disadvantage for every match because of our lack of depth.
In men's tennis, the Dons lost to UC Davis with Joey Sablan defeating Mike Strange 7-6, 6-4 and Bobby Vossoughi winning 6-4, 7-5 for the only Hilltop wins. In action on February 7, the College of Notre Dame was no match for the Hilltoppers, with Vossoughi winning 6-1, 6-0 to lead the way for USF, and Sabian winning 6-0, 6-1 as the top two players. USF won the match 7-0 with no player having much trouble disposing of their CND opponent.
The team however holds a season record or 1-9, picking up their only win against the College of Notre Dame. USF's number-one singles player Andreas Bernhoft has a match record of 6-4 and the number- two player Bobby Vossoughi is 4-6. "It's been a tough year because we have injuries and are playing with two walk-ons," Vossoughi said. "With the exception of Joey, the team has been playing terrible."
