Coach Brovelli has attracted such star freshman recruits as Robbie Grigsby from Lincoln High in the City, and forward Mark McCathrion of Oakland's Bishop O'Dowd High. These players were Honorable Mention and Second Team All-Americans respectively, and both of them can score; Grigsby averaged over twenty-three points a game his senior year at Lincoln while McCathrion averaged over twenty points per game in his school's playoff games. Also, Darrell "Sky" Walker and redshirt Mike Franti are two more talented first year players that should be well known for the next four years. Although young talent is important, every team must have the right blend of experience if it hopes to succeed.
Depth up front will be provided by JC transfer Ken Ramirez and Darrell "Sky" Walker, a two-time All-City player from Long Beach. Peter Reitz, a 6' 11" transfer from Idaho, is the only legitimate center on the Dons roster. With starting center Joe Seager nursing an injured right shoulder and seeing limited action, the Dons went with a small frontline of the 6' 8" McCathrion. 6' 8" Clurdy and 6' 5" Darrell Walker down the stretch, and the Norwegians exploited their height advantage by passing over the top. '"We didn't help on the backside, and we were getting there too late." said McCathrion (TheFoghorn).
