Dan Dobbins, Jr. was the son of a San Francisco and Millbrae fireman and baseball coach. In 1968, at the age of eight, he expressed an interest in pitching, and signed up to play baseball in the Millbrae Lions League. A few games into the season, the coach had to leave because of an family illness and his father stepped in.

“I had never played catch with him before that,” his father said. “I assumed he knew how to play. He worked at it and maybe one or two years later he could play.”

Dobbins played baseball at Mills High School and was eventually inducted into the Mills High School Hall of Fame. He was named All-County and earned a scholarship to USF, becoming the first person in his family to earn a college degree. Later he started driving a bus in the San Mateo Union High School District and has been working in the district’s transportation division ever since. His father became a well known coach in San Mateo County (EastBayTimes).
