Senior Joe Gregori showed some fine hustle in the top of the third, giving the Dons their first run. On first after a bloop single to center, Joe was running as Delagnes attempted the sacrifice bunt. Stanford threw the Don hurler out, but heads-up Gregori streaked for a vacated third base. Mark Marquess, Stanford's All-American first baseman, promptly threw the ball into the stands, allowing Gregori to chug home with the first Hilltopper run of the season. That run held up until the bottom of the seventh (of a seven inning game) when Stanford rallied to knot the score at one apiece. In the top of the 14th, Gregori started another rally. He bunted himself safely to first. Handershott sacrificed, and an error by the Indian shortstop on Bill Garcia's hard grounder put runners on first and third. Still another soph, Larry Jones, laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt, reaching first safely as Gregori scored the go-ahead run. Jones eventually scored on the third baseman's throwing error, and the Hilltoppers led, 3-1 (TheFoghorn).
