Play is interrupted by an interception for a second time, by Steve Malucci. They quickly score on a 30 yd. pass to Mark Thomas. Score: 20-0. The Baseball teams "D" is just too much. Malucchi gets his 2nd interception. The ball is moved well on a good catch by Restani. They score again on a 10 yd. play by Ward. Score: 28-0.
With two outs in the eighth. Rick Restani reached first base on an error by shortstop Bruce Anfensen. When the Hayward pitcher threw the ball away on an attempted pick-off, Restani raced around second and headed for third. Restani looked like he would be out by ten feet, but he keenly dodged the tag and was immediately in position to score the go-ahead run. When Bob Bachtold hit a routine grounder to the shortstop it appeared that Restani would be stranded at third. But the Hayward first baseman took his foot off the base before he was able to catch the throw, allowing Bachtold to be safe at first, while Restani crossed the plate with what was eventually to be the winning run. Despite the poor defensive showing, the Dons were sparked by a super play by shortstop John Nutting. In the fourth inning with USF leading 1-0, Hayward appeared to be threatening with runners at first and second and only one (TheFoghorn).
