The 1986-1987 USF women’s basketball team made history as they captured the second ever West Coast Athletic Conference title with an impressive 10-2 league record. However, in 1988, the conference did not have an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, so the Dons did not get an invitation to postseason play.

The only two blemishes on the conference slate were two closely contested losses. The Dons lost a 55-54 heartbreaker at home versus U.S. International as Teri Hunt scored 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. In the final game of the WCAC season, Santa Clara denied USF a 20-win campaign, 77-71 at Toso Pavilion.

The non-conference highlights included wins over Oral Roberts (84-74), Pacific (90-79) and San Jose State (76-48). The Dons gained a two-game split at the Arizona State Tournament in late November and also went 1-1 at their own Sourdough Classic in early January.

Hunt topped all scorers at 20.7 points per game, while Margaret Walsh (17.0), Chris Hill (8.5) and Melany Furimsky (8.2) all added offensive punch. Point guard Debbie Dunbar dished out 165 assists and added 62 steals.
