Coach Laughlin has a goal. He wants to see a track team established at USF. He is certain that this undeniably tough task is worth wading through the muck of university red tape and little initial enthusiasm. For let's face it, USF is a small school and with soccer, basketball and baseball taking so much glory, other sports don't get much sup port. Cross country has had a rough time of it for years. Laughlin looks on it as a building process. "I'd like to see a lot more people come out next season," he says. "I figured I'd have at least twenty runners at the initial meeting." The club has an advertising problem apparently. Joe Murphy, one of Laughlin's committed athletes, says, "We could have a lot more runners out here. I don't think enough people have heard about it." Murphy says students are surprised to hear about the team and many he's talked to have expressed an interest in participating next year. Murphy also plays soccer for the Dons. He likes the fact that running track keeps him in shape for soccer, and soccer for track. Murphy runs the 800 and 400 meter races (The Foghorn).
