Robert Leonard "Bob" Macaluso was born on September 12, 1937, and was the second child born to Charles and Mary Macaluso. He was born in San Francisco and grew up in the Excelsior District. He attended Corpus Christi grammar school, Archbishop Riordan High School and USF. As a young man, Bob enjoyed all sports, but was particularly skilled at baseball. He played second base for two Riordan Crusader Championship teams, and was a member of the USF Dons. He graduated in 1959 in Political Science. He was a member of the Block Club, Scabbard and Blade, St. Ives Law Society and the Maraschi Club.

Later in life, he was an active member of the San Francisco Old Timers Baseball Association, an avid Giants fan and fixture at his grandsons' Little League games. He spent 40 years as a high school teacher, coach and administrator. He was also in the U.S. Army Reserve for 30 years, where he retired as a Colonel. However, his most unique "job" was working as a statistician for the Golden State Warriors for 45 years (SFChronicle).
