Just for the sake of contrast, let's consider the distance runners next. Terry Healy and Jack Welsh will jog the two-mile grind, while Dave Brewer and Kevin McCready will settle for half that distance. A good pole vault combo should develop with Frank Gordon and Paul Havorka manning the fishing gear. Bob Fairbanks gets over the bar without the aid of the bamboo boost.
The varsity-lists Gino Marchetti, shot and discus; Ed Brown, javelin and discus; Dick Huxley, shotputter; Joe Scudero, dash man; Paul Weidel, hurdler; Jack Hughes, 880; Dave Wilson, 880; Ken Pravitz, shotputter; Bill Green, miler; Dave Brewer, miler; Frank Gordon, pole vaulter; Paul Havorka, pole vaulter; Bob Fairbanks, high jumper; Georgie Stahl, broad jumper; Gregory Galleon, 440; Mike Mergen, shotputter; and Jack Gottsche, spear thrower.
The University of San Francisco soccer team is seeking its fourth straight Northern California Intercollegiate Soccer Conference championship this season. The Dons will be working on a string of 28 games without defeat. Their last defeat came early in the 1948 campaign when they dropped a 2-1 verdict to the Cal Aggies. Since that time the Dons earned a National Intercollegiate co-Championship with Penn State in 1949, and compiled a perfect 11-0 record last season. In All-Coasters, Manny Ortiz, Jose Leon, Ike Ozigbu, and Olunfunmi Osibogun, the Dons possess one of the finest offensive units on the Pacific Slope. To date, the USF soccer team has won two pre-season games, defeating the Mexico A. C. 4-2 and the Alumni 5-2. A recap of the Varsity-Alumni clash of last Saturday should indicate the type of team Coach Gus Donaghue will field this year. The first half was highlighted by a scoring duel between the Alum Dick Baptista and the varsity's Manny Ortiz. Baptista, last year's scoring ace, tallied first on a cross from Frank Gordon. Baptista gave the Alumni a 2-0 lead when he scored on a pass from Art Johansen. Ortiz matched Baptista's two goals with a pair of his own—the first on a smash from 15 feet out; the second on a spectacular head shot which sailed out of reach of the goalkeeper (TheFoghorn).
