Crosetti Speight at 6' 3" played guard for the Dons from 1980 to 1982, and then transferred to University of Hawaii.
The Dons started the game with a full press that immediately caused three turnovers. Midway into the game USF had established a twenty point lead and heartlessly went on to score sixty-six points in the second half. Bart Bovvers led the team with 19 points while Quintin Daily, Rogue Harris, Wallace Bryant, Ken McAlister, and newcomer Crosetti Speight all scored in double figures. As a team the Dons compiled a 65.3 per cent field goal percentage. At this point USF should have withdrew from further competition and finish the year with a perfect record. With minutes left in the game the Dons lost Wallace Bryant and Bart Bowers on fouls. With seven seconds left in the game Crosetti Speight tied up the score at 72 with a driving lay-up. to send the game into overtime. Without Wallace Bryant and Bart Bowers (the teams two top scorers) who fouled out with minutes left in the game, thc Dons were outscored in overtime by a score of 11-12.
As was the case in each of the Don's five defeats this year, USF had several opportunities to win the game. First, they had to overcome a thirteen point deficit midway into the second half which the Dons did on a Quintin Dailey three point play with 44 seconds left in regulation time. This gave USF a 85-84 lead. Two free throws by Crosetti Speight upped that lead to three points with 18 seconds showing. "At that point, there was no way that we were going to lose that game," confided Head Coach Pete Barry. There was a way. One turnover and one missed free throw later, the score was tied at 88 and the game was sent into overtime. The Dons then went into the overtime period with four players in foul trouble, and came out of it three points shy of victory (TheFoghorn).
