Top incoming freshmen include Bob Marquez of South San Francisco's El Camino High, Terra Nova's Mark Johnson, Ricky Doran from El Camino, and Delano Scott from Sacramento's Grant High School. Marquez, who tossed a no-hitter for Central Coast Section champion El Camino, and Scott will fortify the pitching corps. Johnson will offer some competition for the catcher's position and Doran will vie for the second base job for the Dons.
The next day, the Dons jumped off to a 5-1 lead of their own in the first game of a doubleheader. But in the fifth inning, USF starter Bob Marquez got into trouble as two singles and a wild pitch put runners on second and third. Then with two outs, Fresno exploded with a two run single and a two run homer by catcher Dave Holt. Dons relief ace, Steve Eppendido couldn't hold the Bulldogs back and Fresno went on to win, 9-5.
After pitching four very tough innings. Bob Marquez was hit hard in the fifth, giving up two runs before yielding to Dons relief ace Ray Dellaserra. Dellaserra wasn't up to his usual effective form and he gave up single runs in the sixth and seventh, as Cal won the first game 4-3 (TheFoghorn).
