Bob J.R. McSweeney not only has helped the JVs at the plate but has made some outstanding plays in the  field to shore up the Don defense. The score might have been higher for Santa Clara had not Bob McSweeney made a sparkling play at first. With runners at first and second and two outs, a sharp grounder was hit in the hole between first and second. McSweeney dived to his right, stopped the ball, righted himself to his knees, and threw to the covering Schubert for the third out (TheFoghorn).

Of the three major sports here at USF, only one has a Junior Varsity representation, baseball. It is quite obvious that the JVs don't get the coverage any of the Varsity teams do. Of the two baseball teams, the JVs have the better record, albeit not playing as many games as Coach Venedetti's squad. Th eJV's are led by Coach Ed Sickenger is no newcomer to the game. He wa signed bty the San Francisco Giants in 1971 and last year he led San Francisco State to a second place finish in the Golden Gate Conference.

Some of the top players looking forward to next year's Varsity squad are Al Schubert, Greg Jewett, Ed Mitchell, Bob McSweeney, and Ed Chavarria. Schubert is the JV's hard-throwing right-hander who gets most of the starting calls. Jewett and McSweeney anchor the outfield in center and left. Mitchell is a competent shortstop and Chavarria is a hard-hitting catcher (TheFoghorn).
