St. Mary's College at Moraga set thc stage for the Western Conference men's cross country championships last Saturday. Our very own men's cross country team performed exceedingly well against USF league rivals, finishing ahead of Universities San Diego and Pepperdine. The Dons were just inches away from defeating their closest rival St. Mary's College, and clutching a competitive hold for the league championship against Portland. Finishing first as usual for the Dons was Tim Markey, with his customary 'ho hum' performance and a quick 38:12 minutes. Bob Schmidt, USF awesome athlete, scorched in across the finish line at 39:10 minutes, catching a St Mary's runner by one second. Then came the unexpected, as the Dons' team most improved runner Eric 'The Don' Rumph placed with a 40:02 performance and just a few seconds behind his own racing shoes. Now comes 'Miller time', and with this comes Jim Curran, the most persistent all around performer in the conference, placing with a 40:42 finish. Mike Masterson. although hesitant about an injury, was able to pull off a quick 42:09, just seconds ahead of St. Mary's runner Tom Schlong, and clutching for the Dons that ever important fifth position. This Saturday the Dons run their final meet of the season at Stanford for the NCAA title. This conference is looking at a much improved USF cross country team this year, and these Dons hope to take the title in the midst of many stunned competitors (TheFoghorn).

Curran was a Military Science student and also wrote for the Foghorn.
