Ra'oof Sadat. Position played Forward for the Dons from 1996 to 1998. 6' 8".

Ra'oof Sadat doesn't have the prettiest jump shot on the USF basketball team. In fact, it's about as ugly as the new mascot that is supposed to be a giant basketball dressed up like a Don.

Sadat's unorthodox shots were working Friday night as he scored 12 points in the Dons' 85-61 win over Loyola Marymount. His production in the West Coast Conference home opener at Memorial Gym was a marked improvement over his season average of 4.7 points a game.

"He can score," coach Phil Mathews said. "He's going to be a scorer."

Sadat learned his basketball on the streets of Chicago, where he used to shoot at a crate nailed to a telephone pole. He didn't play organized ball until he moved to Las Vegas when he was 12. He fires his jump shot from his chest, with the ball going toward the basket on a low, flat plain. He said coaches have been working with him to improve his shooting style.

"That's all for the good," he said. "I have a low shot and I've got to get it higher." Not so, Mathews said, quickly interrupting the redshirt freshman. "We don't want to change his style. Ra'oof can rebound more and play a little quicker," Mathews said. "But his shot is just fine. He can put the ball in the basket (SFGate)."
