Football: USFÂ victory, as was the Arizona State game, will always stand in the years to come not only as a great athletic feat but as an incentive to future Don teams.
On November 11, backed by half the student body, the USFÂ team traveled to Fresno to gain their most decisive victory of the season over a favored, undefeated (until then) Fresno State. Sheridan played the best game of his career, far overshadowing Fresno's Jackie Fellows. Eris Jamison, a transfer from Santa Ana Junior College, stood out at tackle, as did Sanchez, the Coast's best lineman. Dons will never forget Tex Juen striding to the goal with a deflected Fresno pass. It seemed he would never get there and that any moment he would be dragged down from behind. The whole rooting section strained with every stride he took. Also, remember when big Johnny Sanchez was knocked head-over-tea-kettle by a vicious block (TheDon).
FOOTBALL: To return to the football season of 1942. Tassi together with Howard and Kleckner produced a record-breaking team. The Don eleven proved victors in 6 out of 10 contests. In all, they scored a total of 214 points against 79 for the opponents. Over and above that, this 1942 squad brought home a brand new scoring record with 214 points to take the all-time high honors. the best all-around unit ever to be seen under the banner of the Green and Gold. Men like Johnny Sanchez, Doug Ashton, Ray Gennette, Don Lyons, Bill Taylor, Neill Sheridan, Vic Ramus, Harry Muns, Bill Russo, Fred Rodack, Buss McKnight, Hal Johnston, Fred Shew, Tex Juen, Bob Maddalena, Johnny Cavalero, Marty Grbovaz, Eris Jamison, Tommy Canepa, Ed Creing reins, abandoned by Forrest Twogood in favor of the U.S. Navy, and produced a quintet that won 12 out of 21 contests in the regular season. The Dons didn't stop there, however, but went on to take second place in the Examiner P.AA. tournament. Outstanding performance of the season came when the Hilltop five took a two out of three series over California, its first since 1931 (TheFoghorn).
