Also returning are last year's JV stalwarts: Bob Wiebush, Stan Buchanan, Ray Healy, Dick Lawless and George Hayes. Joe Burke, a soph, out of action last year because of a bad knee, is another man that bears watching, according to Phil. It is obvious to see that competition for positions is going to be very rough, and also obvious that both the defense and offense will be vastly improved.
Faced with the problem of paring down his basketball team last Friday, Coach Phil Woolpert, finally threw up his hands in despair and decided to wait another day. Who are these men who survived the axe? Who know what it is to face the sad, pitiful gleam of a coach's eye? To await the anxiety of momentous decision? Here are the survivors, starting with forwards, then centers, and finally the guards. They are: Jerry Mullen (6' 4"), Keith Walker (6' 3"), Bob Wiebusch (6' 4"), K.C. Jones
(6' 1"), Stan Buchanan (6' 2") and Jerry Harrington (6' 3"), Frank Evangelho (6' 5"), Dick Jensen (6' 6"), Joe Burke (6' 4"), Rich Mohr (5' 11"), George Hayes (5' 11"), Carl Lawson (6' 1"), Clem Korte (6'), Cappy Lavin (6'), Bill Bush (6'), Jack Cannon, (6') and Phil Vukicevich (6'1"). Competition for varsity positions was spirited to say the least (TheFoghorn).
