Elmer Garrigan was a three sport athlete for the then Gray Fog. He played halfback for the football team at 5' 7", 185 lbs., baseball, and was also a basketball star as a forward. He was a member of the Letter Society, the Block Club, and the Foghorn staff.

After leaving school, he began wrestling and was given top billing in numerous matches in the Bay Area. During the war he was a Lieutenant in the Coast Guard. Following his military service, he was employed by the United States Internal Revenue Department.

That the 1930 Ignatian varsity will be assured of a formidable squad was clearly shown by the wealth of material which performed for the St. Ignatius frosh in their initial test with the highly touted Olympic Club Cardinals at Kezar Stadium, Wednesday, October 9, in a preliminary to the Varsity vs. Olympic Club. The St. Ignatius Babes, having only one day's practice behind them, were rather slow in starting, missing shots frequently, and failing to follow the ball off of the blackboard. Thus, the first half was a nip and tuck affair with the frosh on the long end of a 14 to 13 score. With the blowing of the second half whistle, the heat and fervor of the battle seemed to enter their veins, and the combination of Jack Maloney, Garrigan, Murphy, Ensler and Sulick opened up with a bewildering passing attack, that completely baffled their opponents and led to a barrage of consecutive baskets which netted the frosh a 29 to 20 victory.

A few plays later Fitzgerald raced nearly the length of the field for what looked like a touchdown after recovering a fumble, but the play was called back and the Fog was penalized. It might be said that the Gray Fog was lucky to win, but the San Franciscans played "heads-up" football the entire game and capitalized Loyola mistakes into touchdowns. Ohleyer started at quarter and played a fine game at the signal post, but Brubaker and Reid, Loyola halves, covered themselves with glory. Elmer Garrigan got a chance to bark out a few plays from the quarter position (TheFoghorn).
