Biography: Dineen played soccer for four years on the Hilltop under legendary coach Steve Negoesco. Dineen played two years of junior varsity soccer, and two years of varsity soccer. He was a strong defender who played for the 1971 WCISC champions who finished 13-3 overall and advanced to the Final Four in Miami. He was a recipient of The Charles L. Harney Award for the graduating year 1973, given to the graduating athlete with the highest GPA. Dineen was a reserve player as a junior, but emerged as starter during his senior season before getting sidelined by an injury.

Why Dineen Chose USF: "I received an academic scholarship, and my three older siblings had attended or were attending USF; it was for me the natural progression from St. Ignatius High to attend USF."

Favorite USF Memories: "USF was nationally ranked all four years I was at the university. I played fullback; in current lingo the position is an outside back. In my junior year season, the team was very strong ending the season losing in the semifinal game of the national championship. I benefited from the strong showing in games by our starters; as a reserve I often played half of a game. It was also memorable to watch the varsity in my freshman year make it to but unfortunately lose in the National Championship game. But overall, what is most memorable experience for me was getting to play with such a quality group of soccer players. For four years I practiced with some of the best players in the country; I was not at the same level as they were but I was always supported. The practices were often more competitive than the games."

The USF Student-Athlete Experience: "The friendships found on the soccer team remain today, as I am still in contact with a few of my fellow players. And, as I would find out through my working career, balancing  school, sports, and personal life at USF strengthened my organizational/time management and teamwork skills."

Life After USF: Immediately upon graduation, Dineen was hired by Fireman's Fund Insurance Companies in the Actuarial Department, and spent 42 years at Fireman's Fund, retiring in 2015. He had the opportunity to work in many different departments in the company; but primarily spent his career in the Actuarial Department. Dineen played soccer in the first and second divisions of the San Francisco adult soccer league; finishing his soccer playing career in an over-30 men's league in the East Bay. Dineen enjoyed coaching local recreational and competitive soccer teams. He and his wife Margie have three children. His current hobbies are walking, family genealogy, a little golf, and just plain old relaxing.
