SEARCH FOR DON BOXERS UNDERWAY: By BILL WALL Don mittmen are readying to answer Athletic Director Jimmy Needles' call for the initial workout for the Don boxing team. Pippo Scandurra, perennial impresario of student boxing shows, has been appointed .earn manager. Already signed on the team, according to Scandurra are Lionel Cade, classy welterweight on last year's squad. Bill Bussenius, light- heavy and Val Marchi, heavyweight veteran of the 1939 boxing team. The present status of the squad shows a need for boxers in the lighter divisions.

Dan Fisk and Val Marchi are the contenders for heavyweight honors. Dan holds the edge here as he is the holder of a Diamond Belt Title, won while he was boxing for "Spider" Roach's Olympic Club squad. A combination boxer and puncher, Fisk can make things hot for the boys he meets this year if he is in good shape. Marchi, the footballer from Salinas, has yet to earn his spurs; he looks classy in gymnasium work, hits hard and is fast for a big man. Marchi, a 6' 3" 225 pounder from Salinas, was the Dons Heavyweight Boxing Champion.

Malley also has several prospects in mind whose names are to be kept on the "Q T" until the proper time comes. There are a couple of additions from Salinas whom George expects much from. Last year he enlisted Val Marchi and Joe Garcia in a trip down the peninsula. The real heavy work won't start until after the lettermen and veterans turn out. No scrimmage will be held until then and probably only a few after that. George thinks there will be a battle royal for the first string positions for the opening game, September 28, with Stanford University. Val Marchi, the elongated fellow, has been moved from tackle to guard. Marchi was an all-conference tackle at Salinas Junior College, but Boss Malley, searching for bigger men at the guard spots, thinks that big Val will see more action at the new post.

Other outstanding players for the Green and Gold were Pete Franceschi, Mel Reid, Sammy Johnston, and Harry Muns in the backfield, and Bill Moore, John Sanchez, Doc Haley, and Val Marchi in the lin (TheFoghorn).
