Commenting on the past season, Coach Gus Donoghue said that his boys showed a "surprising development in ability as the season progressed." He added, "Men who had never touched a soccer ball before performed remarkably well," singling out Jim O'Neill, Bill Clayton, Art Ander son and Bill Slattery. O'Neill and Slattery can be remembered for their football skill displayed at St. Ignatius High. Others who played a fine brand of ball through the season were captain John Chism, Dick Baptista, Pete Lommori, Reno De Benedetti, Vince Gianni, and Carlie Heredia. When asked to name the outstanding player on the squad this year, Coach Donoghue hesitated and then mentioned the potential All-American and Olymypic Games competitor Steve Negoescu. Regarded as the toughest team in the area to defeat, this years soccer squad will return almost "en toto" next year, much to thc delight of its coach.
First Lieutenant John W. Chism, USF graduate of the class of '48, revisited the campus recently while back from Korea on a short leave. For gallantry in action and for heroic service, Lieutenant Chism wears the Silver and the Bronze Star respectively. Further decorations he has merited are the Purple Heart, five campaign stars, one arrowhead for invasion, two bronze clusters, the E.T.O. ribbon, and the good conduct medal. While at USF, Lieutenant Chism played on the soccer team, was an ROTC cadet battery commander, and a member of the Scabbard and Blade Society. He is now a battery commander in his unit overseas (TheFoghorn).
