James R. Needles, Director of Athletics, announced today that 16 USF athletes will receive their awards, and that five other athletes are being considered for blocks in track. Those receiving blocks in baseball are: Frank Boland, Con Dempsey, Jack McCarthy, Ed Hanna, Ed Dias, Dan Maher, Frank Donohue, Bill Moore, John McCall, and Bill Renna. In tennis, awards will be given to Harry Likas, Fred Von Soosten, Steve Chapralis, Vern Freethy, Rossi, and Lowenbein. Those under consideration for track awards are Jim Coughlin, Bill Taylor, Jim Pappas, Doug Ashton and George Albers.
5 Men Entered: Dink Templeton, Hilltop track coach, will take with him Jim Pappas, Bill Taylor, Jim Coughlin, Tom O'Neill, and Jack Burke of St. Ignatius High School. Pappas will compete in the javelin event. Having taken first place in the triangular meet with College of Pacific and San Francisco State, Pappas will be a favorite in this event. Jim Pappas, made-over trackman, easily emerged victorious in fhe javelin throw with an exceptional toss of 172' 6". Doug Ashton, who has never competed in this event before, took third place in the toss with 157' 11".Â
On second down the Flyers fumbled when Doug Sexton, Washington State was hit by Gligo and Pappas. Connolly went for three, and Lutter passed to Pappas for 15 and a first down. On second down Lutter faked a pass and rambled around end for a touchdown while Mike Connolly put on the key block. Outstanding for the Reserves were Baxley, Dias and Tonge at end; Spindler, Koehnle and Callan, tackles; Fish, at times the best lineman on the field, and Buckley at guard; centers John Gligo and DeRecat; Maddelena and Connolly at full; Jensen and Gori at wing-back; Renna and Pappas, blocking and Lutter and Kleminock at tailback (TheFoghorn).
