Jon French was born on September 6, 1969 in Alameda, CA and attended St. Joseph Notre Dame High School. He attended Modesto Junior College and then USF where he played shortstop for the Dons. he was 6' 1", 175 lbs., and batted and threw right. He was drafted in the 36th round (924th overall) by the Chicago White Sox in 1989, and graduated in 1992.
