Walter Henry Nieland was born on June 3, 1905 in San Francisco of German immigrant parents, and graduated from the then Saint Ignatius College in 1928. He played both football and basketball, and was Vice President of the Saint Ignatius Block Club, composed of members who had won athletic awards. He worked for the Bouquet-Cohn Cigar Company, which opened in 1949 in San Francisco. He was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 1976.

On the guard question, there should be no worry. Mitchell, Mclnerney and Dolan are all experienced men, and smart football players besides, while Captain Dan Murphy is certain to turn in the same brand of consistently stellar play that has been his since his freshman year. At this time Wally Cameron is the only center on the squad, but the style of game he displayed last year speaks for itself, and even if a substitute is not found, it is a safe bet that the pivot point will be one of the strongest places on the line. The back-field candidates are numerous. They include Nieland, Mayers, Doyle, and McDonald, last year's regular quartet, and will be augmented by Casey, Wright, Anderson, Belcher and Brohack.

The game was the first played in the new Kezar Stadium Pavilion, and some 1500 fans were there to thrill at the perfect exhibition offered by the Fog. Maloney sank 19 of the markers, George Olson put on a neat display at guard, and it was greatly due to his work that the Ignatians were enabled to execute their flashy and effective passing attack. Walter Nieland contributed plenty to the thrills of the clash, and Al O'Neil was a tower of strength at guard (TheIgnatian).
