Richard Sweeny was a native of San Francisco, and attended St. Brigid's, St. Ignatius Preparatory High School, and USF, where he graduated in 1952 in Marketing. He was a member of the Marketing Club, and the Ski Club.

He was a teacher in the SFUSD for thirty years, and served as President of Teacher's Association.
