"If the winter league was any indication, the infield won't be a flashy group, but I'm counting on them to make the routine plays. Those plays will keep us in a lot of games this year," Bowman says. The strength of the Dons this season. Bowman feels, is the outfield. Returning for this season is a trio of all-league selections from a year ago: Wayne Giesen. Rich Herbert, and Dave Sheldon. Giesen, a senior, will occupy left field, Herbert moves from second base to centerfield, and Sheldon will see action in right field. Sheldon will also be counted on to give the Dons some innings on the mound, as well as catch.
According to Head Coach Ken Bowman, his team's impressive hitting performance had much to do with the victory. He feels that it was '"the team's best complete offensive effort, with the hitting coming at the right time." He seemed particularly impressed with the performances of first and second hitter Rich Herbert and Angelo Martin, who scored five out of the fourteen runs. In total there were nineteen hits made throughout the day, which is an impressively high number for any team. The good start the Dons have had this season will feed itself, winning builds on winning. Teammate Ray McDonald added, "I know Rich Herbert is going to start carrying this ball club. He is better than his statistics indicate. He can swing the bat (TheFoghorn)."
