Aside from these mishaps, it was a fine afternoon for the Green and Gold, as Pierceall cleared his bench. The Petterle-led offense was 232 total yards, with Ed Kuebrich and Gasparini leading eight Don ballcarriers on the ground. USF moved 29 yards in six plays midway in the first quarter with score coming on a 14 yard pass from Petterle to split-end Gil Kuhn and the rout was on. In the second quarter it was Petterle to Kuhn again, this time for eight yards and six more points.
Only a few minutes later Ed Kuebrich scored on a six- yard run set up on a Petterle to Greene pass which covered 30 yards. Petterle completed seven of 13 passes and had one intercepted. A spirited and tenacious defense, which Pierceall and his aides lauded as "having done a great job for us all year" was the highlight of the Dons' play.
The pin-point passing of quarterback Joe Petterle and the hard running of halfback Ed Kuebrich proved to be too much for an outclassed Napa College football team Friday as USF's Dons registered their first win of the season by a score of 20-7 on Ulrich Field. The fact that this was "Sarge" McKenzie's boys first game of the season made the victory all the more impressive since Napa had opened its schedule a week earlier losing its opener to Santa Barbara C.C. 33-0. Apparently the fear that the Dons were a little short on time in which to prepare for the game was not to be considered as they rolled up a very commendable offensive total of 268 yards, which was divided almost evenly between the passing of Petterle and the hard-charging Don backs. USF opened their first offensive drive on what appeared to be a near-fatal note as star halfback Al Ravella tore a leg muscle on the second play after taking a pass from Petterle down on the Napa 20 yard line and was forced to sit out the remainder of the penalty-marred game which saw each team lose over 100 yards through penalties. However, the bull-like thrusts of Kuebrich seemed to be just about all Napa could handle anyway as he riddled their defense for a total of 75 yards rushing and another 63 yards on the receiving end of Petterle's tosses (TheFoghorn).
