Besides being a fine diplomatic gesture in playing the game, the exhibition gave Negoesco a chance to watch his team perform after a long summer layoff. The results were gratifying to say the least, even though a good amount of soccer buffs stated that the Russian team lacked the skill of most of the Dons regular season opponents. The first half gave notice that, at least offensively, the Dons could be one of the most potent teams in the nation. Forward Leon Heitman started the scoring parade with a 35 yard boot from a slight angle which shot over the Russian goalie's head. Five minutes later big John Miklewright, a product of England, headed a ten foot shot into the Russian goal as goalie E. Polulyach wrongly estimated the high trajectory of the shot. Within three minutes, All-American candidate Hans Friessen scored the first of his three goals using shear footwork to outmaneuver Polulyach. One minute later Friessen netted his second tally on a quick shot from five yards to give USF a 4-0 lead (TheFoghorn).
