Skip Schafer was three-sport standout at Palma High School in Salinas, CA. He was League and Diocesan MVP in basketball as a senior in high school, averaging 16.5 points a game. He went to USF and played on both the Frosh basketball team and the baseball team. He was a utility player and his versatility made him a regular in the Dons lineup. In a 1966 win over Cal, he collected four hits including two doubles. He was a member of Alpha Delta Gamma, Pledge Master his junior year, the Block Club, Club's Council, Inter-Fraternity Council, Order of Royal Snakes, St. Ives Law Society, and was on the President's honor Roll four years. He graduated with a Degree in Accounting (PalmaAthletics).

In the last game of the trip against the University of San Diego, the Dons were pounded hard and dropped a 10-5 decision. USF took advantage of every opportunity USD gave them, and made the most of their five hits to score their five runs, the most in one game on the trip. But the San Diegans combed three pitchers, Mike Green, Skip Schafer, and Frank Burch for ten hits and ten runs. Catcher Jim Beasley had two doubles to pace the Dons.

USF's first hit, a single in the second frame by catcher Dan Quinn, drove home two runs to give the Hilltop horsehiders their only lead of the day over the Broncs at 2-1. Skip Schafer's double in the fifth proved all the Don sticks could muster for the remainder of the afternoon, however (TheFoghorn).
