Excluding the pitching for a moment, varsity starters seem to be set at six of the remaining eight positions. Barring any unexpected opposition, the infield will lineup with Casazza at second, Charley Myers at shortstop, and Don Martini at third. Bill Arata and Bill Shaughnessy will back them up, along with ace pitcher Tony Basques and right fielder Chuck McGuigan The outfield trio consists of Bob Braghetta in left, Stan Johnson in center, and McGuigan in right. Of these, Johnson, the former All-City slugger from SF's Galileo High, is new, having transferred from City College last fall. Del Rossi and Bud Tanner complete the outfield roster.
San Jose pounded the Don pitchers for 17 hits and 14 runs, while the hustling Dons tagged the Spartans for 19 hits and 14 runs. The game lead changed hands frequently until the 8th inning, when a fired-up San Jose club connected for 7 runs on the pitches of Bob Braghetta, enabling the Spartans to forge into a 13 to 9 lead. Bud Tanner relieved Braghetta and managed to smother the Spartan fire. In the bottom of the eighth the Dons pulled themselves together in a fine display of determination and sent 5 runs across home plate (TheFoghorn).
