Providing strong back-up for an already exceptionally potent outfield, are reserves Tom Reese and Mike Mooney. They will see valuable playing time when they relieve Kevin Smith, Ed Mitchell, and co-captains Reggie Brown, and Tony Scoma, who often sees action as the team's designated hitter. But the Dons attack doesn't stop with Brown. Kevin Smith is currently hitting .381 with five stolen bases. Tony Scoma, the team's designated hitter and co-captain is off to a slow start at 5 for 30 but he has good power, and once he gets into the groove, his average should rise considerably.
In the first game against Cal on Saturday, USF broke up a pitcher's duel with two runs in the top of the fifth, with singles by Reggie Brown and Tony Scoma doing the most damage. The two runs sent the Bear's starter to the showers. But the Cal bullpen wasn't up to the task of putting out the fire, as Kevin Smith drove home a third run for USF. The Dons could have blown the game wide open with runners on second and third, but they were unable to come up with the big hit needed (TheFoghorn).
