The hitting attack produced five runs on eleven hits. Bill Garcia and Mike Buskey both got three hits and Randy Zanze chipped in with a pair. Garcia also drove in two runs, as did Tad Tassone with Greg Wyman driving in the fifth run. The big inning was the fifth when USF scored three runs. Zanze led off with a single and Hendershott was safe on a fielder's choice. Tassone then scored Zanze with a sacrifice fly. An error and a walk filled the bases, then Bill Garcia drove in two runs with a single to left. In the first game of a double header the next day, the Dons managed a 7-5 win. The hitters led the way as they scored a run in nearly every inning and got eleven hits overall. Larry Jones led the team with three hits and scored two runs. Tassone also scored two runs as he was 2 for 4. Bill Garcia was the RBI leader again with two and Mike Buskey also drove in two runs with a home run in the sixth inning. Bruce Zimmerman picked up the win in relief of Mike Redling. He pitched three and two-thirds innings and left in the ninth with the bases loaded. Steve McNally picked up from there and retired the next three men to record a save.

The second game was far from being any kind of pitching duel with USF on the short end of a 9-8 decision. The Dons pounded out fourteen hits with Terry Senn getting four and Bill Downing three. With Senn's two-run homer in the first and ensuing hits by Garcia and Downing, the Dons appeared to be on the verge of a three game sweep. However St. Mary's came back to tie the score in the second and go ahead 5-2 with three runs in the third. The Dons picked up three in their half of the third with Bill Downing driving in a run with a triple and Mike Burskey two with a double. The Gaels went ahead in the fourth with three runs as four Don pitchers gave up four walks and a hit batter; St. Mary's made only one hit in that inning. St. Mary's scored what eventually was the winning run in the sixth on an infield hit. The Dons pulled to within one in the sixth on hits by Tassone, Wyman, Senn, and a sacrifice fly by Garcia. A two out rally in the seventh failed to produce the tying run (TheFoghorn).
