A prospective list of thirty-four players signed up for baseball last week at a meeting held by Pete Newell, the Dons new coach. Spring practice is scheduled to start this week at Rossi Playground. The Dons will operate this season as an independent team, and expect to schedule such teams as St. Mary's, Santa Clara, California, and Stanford, with several top notch service teams along the coast to round out the schedule. Plans are underway and will soon be in operation to repair the University's field for baseball, the outfield will be filled with clay, and base lines will be placed on the infield.
Among the signups are Jack McCarthy, who played for USF in '44; Frank Manko, who played four years in high school and then at Michigan State; prexy Lou Dito, who signed up for pitcher, and has under his belt three years experience of playing for the American Legion, and one year in semi-pro. Vice-prexy Jack Durkin has signed up, and also has had semi-pro experience. Dick Morris, along with being an OK football player has had four years of semi-pro experience.
The catching situation is good, with Dick Morris and Vic Campilongo offering two excellent backstoppers (TheFoghorn).
