    Baseball (1946-1947)
The team is shaping up in rapid fashion. Coach Newell is really a tough man, one whose teams will be in top physical shape at all times. At this writing the team is strong in most positions with pitchers being on the "short" list. Big Jack McCarthy is the only boy who looks capable of going nine innings, but Bob McCrainey, and the ailing arm, Lou Dito, show enough ability to develop into starters.

Returning hurlers include Tom Pagee, Tom Butler, Ed Garcia, and Jack McCarthy; along with Jim Ryan from the football team, Dick Webb from San Mateo JC and Dick Baptista from Galileo High who are out for the first time.

Many have remarked how close that left-field fence is on the new diamond. For those interested in statistics, we have been assured by the Athletic Department that it is over 300 feet from home plate. We have our doubts, however. For who was the first to loft a ball over the wall, but a pitcher. Not that pitchers cannot hit the ball, many have, but when the hitter was Jack McCarthy you begin to wonder. Sure Jack is big; sure he's a good pitcher. But can he hit? Well, Jack was mighty proud of his feat, so we went around to the other players, to see just what sort of slugger Mr. McCarthy was. It seems, according to our scouts, that Jack is a hitter with a lot of punch. In fact. one remarked, if he could field, he would be in the starting line-up (TheFoghorn).
