Biography: Railey played baseball for four years on the Hilltop from 2005-2008. He was a member of the 2006 West Coast Conference Championship team. Noted for his defensive prowess at second base, he was named the Regional Team 2008 Defensive Player of the Year. He was a Team Captain and was First Team All-West Coast Conference in 2007 and 2008 and WCC Defensive Player of the Year in 2008 and USF’s team MVP. He was a .331 hitter in his final three seasons, and started all but one of the Dons’ 174 games during that stretch. As a senior in 2008, Railey was second as the Dons’ team captain, he led the team in hits, doubles and walks, and was second in RBIs. He won the school’s Green and Gold Loyalty Award, which the USF Athletic Department gives to only one athlete per year.

Life After USF: After graduation, Railey was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 21st round of the 2008 MLB June Amateur Draft. His best season in the minors came in 2009, when he hit .283 and drove in 13 runs for the Eugene Emeralds in the Northwest League. 

Joey Railey became Head Club Baseball Coach at Menlo College. Prior to Menlo, he was Head Coach at Stuart Hall High School in San Francisco from 2013 to 2016. Railey’s teams were 72-34-1 in his four seasons at the San Francisco private school. Prior to that, he was the Head of Player Development at X-Level Sports Baseball Academy and was the Head Coach of the University of San Francisco Junior Dons.
