SAN FRANCISCO – Hanna Borjeson continued her winning ways for the Dons, but USF succumbed to Western Kentucky 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at The Olympic Club. The sophomore from Gothenburg, Sweden, continued her rise up the USF lineup, taking on Monica Malinen of Western Kentucky and notching the 7-5, 6-3 victory on Court 3. Borjeson now sports a seven-match winning streak for the Dons, and a 7-1 dual match record, providing a bright spot for the squad regardless of her location in the USF lineup, from No. 5 one month ago to No. 3.
Playing from the No. 1 position, Emily Maxfield stretched her competitor in her 7-5, 7-5 dual with Elpida Malamou.  USF's freshman from Murrieta, Calif., continues to improve in her first year of collegiate tennis, giving fierce battle to Malamou, who holds a perfect 10-0 record on the year for the Hilltoppers.
"Right now, we are just trying to get healthy before conference starts," noted USF head coach Hilary Somers. "It's tough when we are missing a couple key players in our lineup, but we are trying to learn the most we can from these matches before we start conference play in a couple of weeks. Today's highlight was Hanna as she continued her win streak. Emily also gave us solid play. She is young, but learning how to compete against the top players in the lineup."Â
The Dons now stand at 2-8 on the season, while Western Kentucky improves to 8-3 on the year. USF closes out a three-match home stand on Tuesday at noon, welcoming Illinois State to the courts at The Olympic Club. Then, the Dons head to the Pacific Northwest to begin league play, taking on Portland on March 24, and Gonzaga on March 25 (USFAthletics).
