Vania Singleterry, a senior guard from the University of San Francisco women's basketball program, has been named as an Honorable Mention selection to the 2011-2012 National Academic All-Jesuit Women's Basketball Team. The squad was announced Friday by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.

Singleterry earned Honorable Mention accolades, posting a 3.57 cumulative grade point average while studying Exercise Sports Science. Earlier this year, she was also named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic First Team.

On the court, the native of Murrieta, CA appeared in all 29 games, averaging 4.3 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. She posted four double-digit scoring efforts during her most recent campaign, including one double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds (USFAthletics).

“Amazing work ethic,” Azzi said. “She’s in the gym early, she stays late, and as a senior, that kind of leadership is what our younger players need to see. … I think she’s shown a lot of character in taking a leadership role from the bench.”

And, ultimately, she has taken full advantage of the student part of the student-athlete equation. A two-time selection to the academic All-West Coast Conference team — “and she had it the first year,” her father noted, “but they don’t recognize freshmen” — she is majoring in Exercise and Sports Science with the goal of going on to medical school (PressEnterprise).
