James G. B. "Jim" DeMartini, Jr., was raised in San Francisco, and attended St. Ignatius Preparatory High School, and USF. He was a member of the Sodality Club, Scabbard and Blade, the Maraschi Club, the College Players, the Football Manager, and the Foghorn Business Manager. He was a Second Lieutenant in ROTC, and then was commissioned a Lt. Colonel. He served in the Army Coast Artillery Corps during the Korean War. He graduated in English in 1949, in addition to a Master's and a Law Degree. He taught and held advanced pilot license and flight instructor awards. He was an instructor at the San Rafael Military Academy in 1941 (SFChronicle).
