Holds USF school record in the 800 meters

Biography: Gomes participated in both cross country and track and field for four years on the Hilltop. He competed for USF at three distances throughout his career on the track and field squad - 400, 800 and 1,500 meters. During the 2012 track and field campaign Gomes set the USF school record in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:52.35 at the West Coast Invitational, finishing in second place.

Why Gomes Chose USF: "While athletics helped pave my way into college, I chose USF due to the institution's commitment to social justice and bettering the world around it. I was so pleased to see this commitment actualized in our athletic department's volunteer efforts throughout my four years on the Hilltop."

Favorite USF Memories: "Our track and field team was a relatively large group, and even with the diverse set of personalities and characters, we had overall great team chemistry. Some guys were more serious, some more playful, but at the end of the day there was a great deal of admiration for one another."

The USF Student-Athlete Experience: "The best thing about being a student-athlete is not only playing the sport I love and "mastering" my skills, but also learning skills outside of the sport. For example, I learned how to balance academics and sports all at the same time. Being able to organize my time between qualifying, practice, traveling, study hall, and early morning workouts is definitely a great quality to have. Even though golf is known to be an individual sport, playing in college taught me that golf can be a team sport as well. Looking from the outside in, I realized that as a student athlete I learned to adapt to people different than me and to work together together to accomplish the same goals. Lastly, the best thing about being a student-athlete at USF is having the privilege to be given opportunities other students don’t receive. I am grateful for the opportunities that USF and USF athletics has given me. My four years at USF as a student athlete has played a huge role in developing who I am today."

Life After USF: Since graduating, Gomes has been in the cannabis technology space working towards the goal of safe access for all and social equity. Always a Don, he still finds the time to go for leisurely runs thinking back to when those runs were a little more intense at USF.
